Advancing towards a new mobility, with less air pollution and less noise

  • Public transport by bus has experienced a sustained growth: it exceeded 10 million annual passengers in 2003 and will be close to 14 million in 2019, a trend interrupted by the pandemic: the figure has dropped to 10.6 million in 2021. The bus fleet, with the planned renovations, already reaches 47% of hybrid vehicles.
  • With regard to the number of vehicles, it has gone from just over 100,000 in 2000 to almost 138,000 in 2020, i.e., 614 vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants. In the 2008-2020 period, motorcycles have grown by 46.95%, while passenger cars have grown by 6.38% and the other categories have experienced reductions.
  • According to the Mobility Plan forecasts, pedestrian areas will be enlarged, doubling the space for pedestrians in the central area of the city.
  • The strategic change in mobility in the city is fundamentally focused on promoting mobility on foot and the use of bicycles, as well as encouraging public transport. The air quality and smog reduction plans are complemented by the mobility and transport strategy.
  • Through the association of municipalities of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area, work is underway on the schedule and implementation of a future Low Emission Zone.
